Dad at his 25 year club (Kemper Cabinets) & his favorite toy
The following story was written by Monte & Hildegard Hendrickson, based on information given to them by
Colson & Franklin Knuckles, and other family members.
Robert Knuckles or Nuckols was 45 years old in the 1860 Census. He was born 1815 - died 1905 (at age 90) and is buried at the Stoney Fork Cemetery near where Stoney Fork empties into the Right Fork of Straight Creek. He gave his place of birth in Virginia. (He was the son of Obadiah Knuckles or Nuckols (Virginia records spelled his name Obediah Nuchols) and his mother was Elizabeth Willis who were married Feb. 3, 1801 in Goochland, VA.) Robert had one brother William Knuckles or Nuckols. When the brothers came into Kentucky, Robert made his home in the mountains. William went on down in the flat lands of Kentucky. My grandpa told me they never saw each other again. Prior to their arrival in Kentucky the family name was most often spelled NUCKELS or NUCKOLLS; in Kentucky however, KNUCKLES has been used most often. Other spellings of this name, as found in old records in the Virginias, and in the Carolinas were: NUCKOLS, NICHOLS, NICKOLS, KNUCKEL, NICOLS, NICHOLLS.
Robert Knuckles made his home at Knuckles Branch in Stoney Fork of Bell
County. He went down to Lone Jack, Four Mile, KY., and courted and married
Margaret Hendrickson (born January 1, 1820 in Knox County. KY. - died March
14, 1890 (lived 70 years), buried at Stoney Fork, Bell County. KY. She was
a daughter of Reuben Hendrickson and Hannah Davis (Reuben's parents were
Ezekiel & Jemima (Mima) Hendrickson, who came to Kentucky ca. 1808.
I believe Ezekiel's daddy was from Norway, and his mother was German -
I do not know her name). Margaret Hendrickson was 39 years old in the 1860
Census and gave her place of birth in Kentucky. Margaret's brothers and
sisters were: (a) William (who married first Deborah Bingham; second Margaret
Slusher. (b) Rachel (who married Michael Howard, son of John Howard). (c)
Nancy (who married Jacob Perciful). (d) Sally (who married Samuel Lock(e)
on July 26, 1848). (e) Joel (who married first Nancy Bullard; second Eliza
Bullard). (f) Noah (who married Diadame Bingham). (g) George (who married
Elizabeth Christine Steele). (h) Mary (who married John Amis). (i) John
(who married Frances Tinsley). (j) Martha Jane (who married John Epperson).
In the summer of 1993 regrading and widening of the Highway at Four Mile
forced the relocation of the graves of Margaret's parents, Reuben and Hannah,
her brothers George and John and their families. They all were reburied
in Pinelawn a beautiful, perpetual care cemetery just east of Pineville,
which was developed by Earl J. Knuckles (ninth child of James F. Knuckles
& Lily Napier.)

CHAPTER SIX - FAMILY OF ROBERT BOYD "ROBIN" KNUCKLES
Robert Boyd 'Robin' Knuckles - sixth child and fourth son, born 1853 - died .... at Knuckles Branch in Stoney Fork of Bell County, KY. He was known by the name of Robin Knuckles, my grandpa, who told me the early part of the Knuckles Family History. Robin Knuckles first married on Jan. 7, 1875 Sally Asher Crank.
Children of Robert 'Robin' Knuckles and Sally Asher Crank Knuckles
First child: Matt Knuckles. Uncle Matt married Jane Farmer (a daughter of Sam Farmer) they did not have any children.
Second child: Lucinda Knuckles - married a Sizemore. Aunt Lucinda had one son, Matt Sizemore. My Daddy told me the last he heard of Matt Sizemore, he was in Louisville, KY.
Children of Robert 'Robin' Knuckles and his second Wife, Martha Neal (a daughter of William Neal and Betsy Farmer)
First child: Robert Boyd Knuckles, born 1888 - died .... who married Lily Sizemore born 1886 - died .... (a daughter of Elhanon Sizemore and Nancy Mattingly), are my parents. Their twelve children are: First son: Elhanon Knuckles, born 1907 - died 1939 who was named after my mother's daddy Elhanon Sizemore. Elhanon married Chancy Lawson (a daughter of Wilk Lawson and Fanny Brock. Elhanon died at near 32 years of age. They had just one child, a son named Freemon, who is retired from the Air Force of the United States. Second son: George Matt Knuckles, born 1909 - now living at Covington, KY. married Ena Smith. They have one son Anthony. George Matt fell off a porch when he was a small boy and was unable to walk. He crawled on his hands and his knees until he was near 12 years of age. John Dewall, the man who came into the mountains with the Evangical Church took George Matt up in his arms and took him to Louisville, KY., to the hospital for operations to straighten his legs. He is still paralyzed in his legs, but John Dewall brought George Matt back to us walking on crutches. He still wears braces from his waist down. George Matt started school at near 12 years of age, finished college, and taught school for 40 years. He is retired, near 83 years of age. I, Colson, think of my brother George Matt as being a "Wheel Hoss". He made a better living than any one in our family. There is not any one more independent than George Matt. Third son: Albert Knuckles, born 1912 - now living at Corbin, KY., married Margery Lawson. (I will write later about the grandson of Aunt Hannah.) When Martha was a small girl, her mother Margaret was in Harlan town with a man by the name of Adam Asonavich. For some reason they decided to leave Martha in a store in Harlan town. Seems like Margaret thought more of Adam than her daughter. So they forsook Martha in Harlan town. But thank almighty God, she was found by Bascum Daniels, who took her to his home and re-named her Florence, and she was raised by Bascum Daniels and his wife Phoebie Daniels. When Florence (nee Martha) was grown she married Hiskel Bascum Roark, born 1892 - died June 5, 1966. Their children are: First child: Moudie Jane Roark, b. Nov 4 1921 Harlan Co. - died Dec 29 1921 Second child: Nancy Roark. Third child: Christine Roark married Lawrence Hensley. Their children are: (a) Nancy (b. May 14 1953 Bell Co); (b) Curtis Eugene (b. Jun 22 1955 Bell Co.); (c) Michael Edward (b. Jan 21 1966 Bell Co.); and (d) Rhonda Jo (b May 14 1968 Bell Co.). Fourth child: Ollie Roark married Levi Moore. Their children are: Margorietta (b. Sep 21 1954) and Danny (b. Apr 24 1957). Fifth child: Noah Roark b. March 4, 1926 Harlan Co. married. Vergie (Virginia) Hensley. Their children are: (a) Ray Kenneth (b. Oct 4 1947 Harlan Co.); (b) Mary Lou (b. Oct 11 1949 Harlan Co); (c) Terry W. (b. Apr 19 1951 Bell Co.); (d) Carolyn Sue (b. Jun 9 1953 Harlan Co.); and (e) Sherrie (b. Feb 1 1964 Harlan Co.). Sixth child:- Homer Roark (b. Feb 9, 1938 Bell Co.) married Georgia Daniels. Seventh child: Manford Roark (b. Jan 22 1941 Bell Co.) married Niokie Craig. Their children are: Darryl Glen (b. May 19 1966 Bell Co.); Donnie Edward (b. Jan 25 1968 Bell Co.); and Manford Edward Jr. (b. Aug 10 1976 Bell Co.). Eighth child: Hazel Roark married. James Humfleet. Children: Diana Lyn and Kathy Orline.
We now go back to Margaret Knuckels (daughter of Hannah Knuckels) again: Margaret also had a son by Adam Asonavich. (Vital statistics in Frankfort spell Margaret Farmer's married name Asanoage. Her son Robert's obituary reads: Asanoage, Robert born June 28, 1912 Harlan County. KY., died July 2, 1912 lack of nourishment. Son of Adam Asanoage, born in Russia, and Margaret Nuckles, Bell County, KY. They had another son named Thomas, or Tommy as we called him. As a young man, Tommy was taken into the Red Bird Mission School by John Dewall, its superintendent. The Red Bird Mission School was a work of the Evangelical Church. The schoolwork did not agree with Tommy Knuckels Asanovich. So Tommy and school buddy George White stole two of the Mission's horses and left with them. John Dewall by some means got the Mission's horses back. In later life Tommy came back to Red Bird and he tried to tell someone his name was Tommy Asanovich. Tommy said if you can't think of Asanovich - "just call me a Sonabich." I don't know who Tommy's wife was. But I believe Tommy's children are in California by the name of Asanovich. When Tommy was a boy, his family lived in the next house below us on the Left Fork of Straight Creek in Bell County. Tommy's dad was a coal miner. He had black powder in cans. He used this to shoot down coal in the coal mines. Tommy and my brother Albert would steal this powder and make their own fireworks. Tommy must have known how to use the powder and fuse - or they would have been burned up with the blasting powder.
The above story completes the listing of the direct descendents of
Robert and Margaret Hendrickson Knuckles (Nuckols).
REMEMBERANCES OF GREAT-GREAT AUNT SALLY AND
GREAT-GREAT UNCLE BILL NUCKOLS
(as told to Colson Knuckles)
After Obadiah Nuckols' first wife died (they had just two children: Robert and William), he then married a ........ Brittian, who (from a previous marriage(s)) was the mother of "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. She and Obadiah had just one child - "Aunt" Sally Nuckols (more in next paragraph). In the following list are the names of Obadiah's stepchildren: (1) Carlo Helton; (2) Ephriam Helton; (3) William Helton (he took the Nuckols name and was called 'Uncle" Bill Nuckols); (4) Solomon Collins (later called Sol Nuckols); (5) Elizabeth Helton (she married Sol Nuckols). Elizabeth and Sol are the parents of Adkin Nuckols. Colson used to visit Adkin Nuckols house. Adkin had two sons: Ray and Floyd; and (6) Lucy Helton.
Now I would like to give remembrances of "Aunt" Sally Nuckols who was the last of Obadiah Nuckols children. She was a half-sister of "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. Her mother was a Brittian, as Bell County High Sheriff Jim Helton told me. Jim Helton was a son of Jonas Helton, who was a son of Carlo Helton and Elizabeth Farmer, (a daughter of Captain Jim Farmer and Susie Skidmore). Carlo Helton was a half-brother to "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. Morgan Helton (son of Carlo Helton) told me "Uncle" Bill Nuckols' Dad was Arnold Helton. "Uncle" Bill Nuckols had the first store and the first post office on Red Bird, in the headwaters of Red Bird. His great-grandson was Grover Knuckles (born April 7, 1923 - died January 7, 1994), who lived in Blanchester, Ohio. I never saw Grover Knuckles, but he wrote to me and told me "Uncle" Bill Nuckols first called the new post office Red Bird, Kentucky. Later "Uncle" Bill Nuckols changed the post office name to Beverly, Kentucky.
"Uncle Bill' (William Richard) Nuckols (born March 10, 1841 Little Sycamore Creek, Claiborne Co. TN - died Sept. 2, 1910 Bell Co KY buried Knuckles Cemetery., Beverly, Bell Co KY) was a Veteran of the Civil War, a Union Soldier. He came back from the war and courted and married on April 14, 1865 (same day President Lincoln was assassinated) Amanda Jane Asher ("Mandy Jane") born Oct 29, 1845 - died Jan. 28, 1890 (a daughter of Wilkerson Asher and Lucinda Bingham). I believe "Uncle" Bill Nuckols (the stepson of Obadiah Nuckols) changed the spelling of the name "Nuckols" to "Knuckles".

They had the following children: (a) Audrey (whom I got to know); (b) Douglas (retired from the U.S. Army living in North Carolina - I used to get letters from his daughter Sylvia Luesay; (c) Grover - from whom I received letters - lived and died in Blanchester, OH; (d) Ted & (e) Eunice (-twins) - I believe they are in North Carolina.

James Farmer Knuckles died in infancy.
Richard Knuckles died in infancy.
Wilkerson Knuckles died in infancy.
Tom Knuckles was the grandpa of Grover Knuckles. I don't know which was named first, the Beverly, KY. post office or "Uncle" Bill Nuckols' son John Beverly Knuckles. (If I knew the age of the Beverly post office, I would know which was first, as I some times see John Beverly Knuckles tombstone)
All of "Uncle Bill's" children had dark heavy hair. I have "Uncle Bill" listed in the 1860 Census as William Helton (himself) living with his brothers and sisters, namely Carlo Helton, Ephiram Helton, Elizabeth Helton (later called "Granny Betts"), and also Lucy Helton (who married Enoch Brock - they lived on Mudlick, where I now live, which now is Bell County, but in 1860 was Clay County). I checked Uncle Bill Nuckols date on his tombstone with his date as William Helton in the 1860 Census.
Now I will get back to "Aunt' Sally Nuckols (who was a half sister to my great-grandpa Robert Knuckles - and also a half sister to "Uncle" Bill Nuckols). When "Aunt' Sally was old, she lived with my grandpa (Robin Knuckles,) at Long Branch on the Right Fork of Red Bird. 'Uncle" Bill Nuckols had the only store new where my grandpa lived, and my Daddy (Robert Boyd Knuckles) told me, that when they got ready to go to "Uncle" Bill Nuckols store at Cow Fork, "Aunt" Sally Nuckols would say: "Tell Brother Bill to send me some Baccer". That was all she ever asked for. My Daddy said "Uncle" Bill Nuckols always sent "Aunt" Sally Nuckols some Baccer.
I knew old man George Slusher for many years (he was a store merchant) and he said: "Uncle' Bill Nuckols gave away more candy than I've ever sold.
In her younger years, 'Aunt" Sally Nuckols and Ransom Lawson had a love affair. And from this love affair a daughter, Anna Nuckols, was born. When Anna Nuckols was grown to a young woman, she married Milt Miller (from Four Mile, KY.). I knew some of their children: T. J. Miller and Anna Miller. I believe "Aunt" Sally Nuckols and her daughter Anna Miller were buried at the Bear Grave Yard at Four Mile, KY.
P.S. added by Colson Knuckles in November 1994
Just this about Grandpa Robin Nuckols: He had a real nice white beard
- way down on his chest. I believe he married near seven times. After he
became an old man, I believe he wanted to marry again. He got stuck on
Emmy Taylor, a young lass, and he wanted to walk home with her. She began
to move away from him, and here is what he said to her: "Oh no, hold on
here, there has been wilder heifers than you milked in a gourd.
